Fashion is a field in which change is essential, and as the time goes by, we don't actually have the resources and moreover the imagination to bring clothes at a whole, new level. Let's be frank - we have micro-skirts, ripped jeans, sport bras: we can't take clothes at an even more minimalistic lever, that's why a great movement is reinventing fashion trends from the past: call it retro, but nowadays, youngsters and teenagers are all into reaccessorizing hippie clothes, punk jackets and '60s skirts. Let's focus for now on the hippie movement, and implicitly, its style.
Hippies have their roots in the beat generation, which mainly appeared in mid 20th century America. The beat generation was all about alternative forms of expressing one's self. The hippies took the avant-gardism at a new level: their main objectives were world peace and brotherly love. Love, life, dance, spirit, psychedelicness, opposing the mainstream - those were the hippies. They fought against the Vietnam war and have become internationally famous by the means of the Woodstock festival, among others.
In order to bring back to life the hippie style, you mainly need to follow some basic rules.
1. Don't hold back on reusing clothes. If you don't have enough money so that you can go for stores which actually deal in hippie fashion, don't hesitate to visit second hand boutiques. You can find lots of awesome pieces of clothing there. Also, try to focus on bright colours, friendly patterns and there are NEVER too many flowers! As I said earlier, the hippies were all about peace, and even more about nature.2. Ripped jeans will work if you don't find more comfortable, laid back bottom clothing.3. Accessories should include colourful scarves, leather necklaces with nice, themed pendants, and flowery, warm head pieces.4. Keep your hair natural, long and healthy!5. Use alternative fabric. You may consider cotton and/or wool. Also, if out of ideas, you can combine your outfits with some military themed accessories. The hippies were all about showing their support to the troops in Vietnam, and waiting for their coming back. Your anti-war orientation could be suggested by them.Last, but not least, remember - clothes mean nothing if you don't have the right attitude. Don't dress hippie unless you actually follow hippie philosophy. Simply put, don't be a poser. Know your subject and maybe try listening to some '60s and '70s rock, along with reading some beat literature.
